If you've been hearing about changes to the NDIS or aged care lately, you're not alone in feeling a little unsure. News headlines, social media posts and well-meaning friends can leave you with more questions than answers, along with a nagging worry about what it all means for you.
Here's the good news: you don't need to become an expert in legislation. The people best placed to explain how changes affect your supports are the ones already delivering them. Your provider, plan manager, support coordinator or care manager should be able to walk you through it in plain English.
The key is knowing what to ask.
Before the conversation
Grab a notebook or open the notes app on your phone. Jot down the supports you rely on most, anything you've heard that's worrying you, and any letters or emails you've received recently. If conversations like this feel overwhelming, ask a family member, friend or advocate to come along. A second set of ears always helps.
Questions to ask your provider
Will any of the changes affect the supports I currently receive?
If so, when?
Will my costs, fees or contributions change?
Can I get that in writing?
Do I need to do anything, like sign a new agreement, update my care plan or book a review?
Will I keep the same support workers or carers?
If my budget changes, how will you help me prioritise what matters most?
How will you let me know if something changes down the track?
Who can I contact if I have more questions later?
Questions for families and carers
How can I stay informed if I'm helping manage a loved one's supports?
What should we keep an eye on in statements or invoices?
Listen for the right answers
A good provider will answer patiently, explain things without jargon, and be honest when they don't yet know something. Reforms often roll out in stages, and some details take time to be worked through. "I'm not sure yet, but I'll find out and call you back" is a perfectly good answer. Pressure to sign something on the spot, or vague reassurances with nothing in writing, are not.
Go to the source
Your provider is a great starting point, but for official information, go straight to the source. NDIS participants can visit ndis.gov.au or call 1800 800 110. For aged care, visit myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422. Free, independent advocacy services are also available if you'd like someone in your corner.
You're allowed to ask
Asking questions isn't being difficult. It's being informed. These are your supports, your budget and your life. The right provider will welcome your questions and see them as part of working together.
And if you're reading this at the expo, you're in the perfect place to start. Many of the providers here today are already having these conversations, so bring your list, pull up a chair and ask away.
