Navigating the NDIS can be overwhelming at times—especially when it comes to choosing the right providers. One of the most important questions you can ask is: How do I know if my provider is compliant with NDIS standards?

Let’s break it down simply, so you can feel confident and in control of your choices.

✅ What Does "Compliant" Actually Mean?

A compliant NDIS provider follows the rules, guidelines and quality standards set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission). This ensures you’re receiving safe, respectful and high-quality services that protect your rights and support your goals.

Whether you're working with a registered or unregistered provider, compliance is still essential.

🔍 6 Ways to Check If Your Provider Is Compliant

1. Check if they’re registered (if registration is required)
Go to the NDIS Commission’s Provider Register and search their business name. While not all providers need to be registered, if your plan is NDIA-managed, your providers must be.

2. Ask about their policies and procedures
A compliant provider should have clear policies around privacy, complaints, incident reporting and risk management. Don’t be afraid to ask questions like:

  • What happens if I’m unhappy with a service?
  • How do you protect my personal information?

3. Look for the NDIS Practice Standards
Ask the provider how they meet the NDIS Practice Standards. These standards cover everything from your rights and decision-making to worker screening and service delivery.

4. Staff checks and training
Ask if their team has completed NDIS Worker Screening checks and what kind of training they’ve received. Compliance means having the right people delivering support the right way.

5. Transparency and communication
You should feel included in decisions about your support. If a provider is making changes without talking to you, not sharing agreements or service bookings, or isn’t responsive, these could be red flags.

6. Read reviews or ask others
Sometimes the best insights come from other participants or support coordinators. Ask around or check online communities for honest feedback.

🚩 Red Flags to Watch Out For

  • They don’t provide you with a written service agreement.
  • They avoid questions about their policies.
  • They’ve been the subject of complaints or investigations.
  • They offer cash or incentives to sign up quickly.
  • You feel unsafe, disrespected, or ignored.

📣 What If I Have Concerns?

If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. You can:

  • Talk directly to the provider first (if you feel safe to do so).
  • Contact your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator for guidance.
  • Lodge a complaint with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission on 1800 035 544 or through their website.

👏 Remember: You Have Rights

You have the right to feel safe, respected and supported by the people working with you. Knowing your provider is compliant helps you build trust and make the most of your NDIS plan.
